I recall my Saba Kasim’s stories of Jesus’s teachings on love and salvation. He recounted the healings and miracles Jesus performed throughout the region. I recall him saying how kind Jesus was to beggars and lepers and how he admired and respected women. He told of Jesus’s gentleness with children and how this was all so life-changing.
My Saba was there when the High Priest Caiaphas turned Jesus over to be crucified by the Romans. In fact, he was so distraught over the crucifixion that he lingered in Jerusalem for days and became an eyewitness to Jesus’s resurrection while on the road to Emmaus.
I recall him saying, “Jesus instructed us to go to Jerusalem and wait for the promise of the Holy Spirit, whom He says will fill us with power from Heaven.”
What that meant no one really knew, but there we found ourselves waiting in Jerusalem to receive the promise. If only Saba could have been there, but after his last trip, it proved to be too much for him.
“Salim, if I can’t make this journey, you must go. You need to be an eyewitness to the events Jesus spoke of. It’s our family legacy, our inheritance, to partake in the promises of our Lord Jesus. This will be carried down from generation to generation to be an unbroken legacy of the Ma’an family.”
And indeed, it proved to be every bit as life-changing as Saba declared it would be.
