Psalm 131:3
O Israel, put your hope in the Lord -- now and always.
Beloved: I think of hope as the expectation of a good outcome. This verse challenges me to trust in the Lord for that good outcome in the present and forever. It also means I can’t take on expectations for myself—things too great and awesome for me to grasp—but instead content myself with those things that I can do, those everyday tasks that You give me to work on. I thought I was doing that, but somehow it went wrong.
Lover: Put your hope in Me. It is all too easy to begin to trust in your own ability to fulfill your expectations. Instead you need to focus on Me to know what My expectations are and to see how I will work in and through you to accomplish them. Remember the mouse who rode across the swinging bridge on the elephant and cried out, “We really made that bridge move!” Remember who is really swinging the bridge!
6Praise be to the LORD, for he has heard my cry for mercy. 7The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song. 8The LORD is the strength of his people, a fortress of salvation for his anointed one. 9Save your people and bless your inheritance; be their shepherd and carry them forever.
(Psalm 28:6-9, NIV)
