Khartoum, Omdurman, and Bahri (North Khartoum) are huge cities of about a million people each. The Niles separate the three “towns.” The Blue Nile comes into Khartoum from the east, having originated in the highlands of Ethiopia. It separates Khartoum from Bahri. The White Nile originates in Uganda in the south and flows north through the swamps of southern Sudan at a leisurely pace until it reaches the capital, separating Khartoum to the east from Omdurman to the west.
At Mogran they join and form “the” Nile, which flows north to Egypt. “The” Nile separates Omdurman from North Khartoum. In places, the Nile is at least a half mile wide. So, greater Khartoum is a BIG city, and traveling from one part to another without a car was challenging, especially in the extreme temperatures.
