Sometimes I took buses when I went to another part of the city, most of them about ready for a museum. Their windows didn’t close and often the doors didn’t either, possibly because they were so full. Passengers hung out the doors while the buses were moving. During difficult times, people just grabbed hold of a bus window ledge from the outside, lifted their feet off the ground, and rode along. When the bus stopped for a light or because of traffic, the hangers-on would let go to rest their arms and hands until the bus started again. Then they reached up and grabbed the window ledge until the next stop. I don’t think they had to pay the fare.
