I’m not going to give you a whole Arabic course, but there are a few words that you must know, and now is a good time to explain them. If you learn no other Arabic words, you need to know the “IBM” of Sudan. The IBM is: Insha’allah, “God willing”; Bukra, “tomorrow”; and Ma’alesh, “sorry, too bad.”
On one occasion, I squeezed into a taraha (shared taxi) with several men. During the half-hour ride over the White Nile Bridge and into Khartoum, one of the men struck up a conversation with me in English. When we arrived at our destination, we got out. But my “new friend” asked to meet me back there later that after-noon. I realized he was trying to pick me up, and I wondered what on earth I could say to extricate myself from this plight. In answer to a silent prayer, the words insha’allah came out of my mouth. It worked beautifully, and honor was spared on all sides. It is a great replacement for “maybe.”
