Petty theft occurs frequently. I received one good piece of advice: Keep your hand in your pocket so no one else has theirs in it! One colleague carried a large wad of cash into town to buy furniture. Knowing the dangers of being robbed, she put the money into her bra. While walking to the store, she suspected that someone might have his hand in her bag. She reached in and felt a hand that wasn’t hers! She grabbed it, held on and shouted, “Harami, harami!” (Thief, thief!) The man became alarmed when he couldn’t escape and this woman continued shouting and slapping his hand. He began saying, “Pole mama, pole!” (Sorry mama, sorry!) In the end, she let him go.
Further advice includes:
Carry nothing that is irreplaceable, such as photographs of family.
Don’t wear expensive jewelry.
If you don’t have to have it, leave it at home.
