This compilation of stories attempts to convey what life is like for the ordinary Sudanese. In the West, I’m asked, “How is Sudan different from here?” I wonder where to begin, since there are so few similarities. I find it hard to conceptualize the West and Sudan in my mind simultaneously, as if it weren’t possible for both to be part of the same planet. And yet their dreams and aspirations in life are not so different.
Learning another culture is like walking around in the dark in an unfamiliar house. You don’t know where anything is until you bump into it, sometimes gently, sometimes painfully. Meanwhile, you are desperately looking for a light switch, hoping to be able to see more clearly how to get around. One motivation for this book is to bring a little light and understanding about the world of the Sudanese.
