“Run,” Gabriel said.
Our feet flew down the pathway as the dark ghoul glided swiftly over the ground leaving a trail of dead plants. It sucked the life right out of the beauty of the Earth, and I knew it would do the same if it caught up to us. It was chasing us straight back to the school.
We crashed past the bushes and ferns that lined the pathway. The Horde behind us growled again as two others joined its chase. It had called for them to assist. I suddenly remembered what Penelope had taught me—they hunted in packs.
Gabriel grabbed my hand as we ducked through the heavy wooden door. I stumbled into the dark tunnel as Gabriel swung around and pulled it closed while locking the iron latch. He backed up as the Horde on the other side crashed into the door, their claws digging into the wood.
“Why are they still coming after us?” I asked, out of breath.
“We're not on school grounds yet!” Gabriel shouted.
The door splintered. Claws broke through one of the wooden panels and started chipping away at the rest. The banging and growling ceased suddenly as black smoke pooled through the opening and slithered to the ground inside the tunnel.
“We need to go,” Gabriel said, backing away from the door. “Now!”
