The Lab was located in a nondescript building in North Omaha. It was an old, single-story, brown brick building with one steel door at the entrance. All of the windows had been filled in, so there wasn't any natural light. I didn't know how the employees could stand it. I'd feel trapped. An intercom was situated on the wall to the right of the door. I pressed the zero button to get an operator. Dawn Ryker's voice came over the speaker.
"Smile for the camera."
I looked up, smiled, and waved. I heard the door lock click and I entered into a small alcove surrounded by what I assumed was bulletproof glass. A beam of light scanned me through the glass. I couldn't see a door, but I heard another click, and a portion of the glass opened into a long, narrow hallway with white walls and bright lights. I heard the footfalls of someone's heels and Dawn appeared from around a corner at the end of the hall. I met her midway.
"That the finger?" She reached for the box. I handed it to her.
