"Scott, I'm not ready for this."
"Is this about Murphy?" He turned. His eyes met mine.
"No."
"Is he back?"
"Yes."
"Then it is about him. When did he get back?" He'd been holding a dish towel and threw it onto the counter.
"A few days ago."
"And he's why you've been avoiding me."
"No, he's not."
"By all accounts, he's an asshole. He left you in the middle of the night. No explanation, remember? He disappeared for months."
"Look, I'm not having this conversation with you." I pushed my chair into the table.
He set his glass onto the counter.
"Murphy isn't worth your time." He walked out of the kitchen. I followed him. He stood at the front door.
"What? You're leaving?"
"Isn't that what you want? I promised you dinner. Dinner is over."
"Scott, this isn't about Murphy. You and me, we just ..."
"Dez, we're great together. You don't want to admit it because your head is caught up with Murphy. Nothing good is going to happen there."
"I'm not looking for anything to happen there."
"Yeah, you are."
He opened the door and left. My boy toy grew a pair. Now what? Godfrey nudged the back of my leg with his nose. I patted his head, locked the front door, and went back into the kitchen for my wine glass and re-filled it. I replaced the bottle in the fridge. At least I had leftovers.
