“Don’t be afraid. That’s my pet. He won’t hurt you.”
“Your pet?”
“Yeah. He lives with me and gives me food whenever I want it. He walks with me and plays catch. He’s quite well trained, I must say. It can be difficult to find a good pet.”
“But, how did you get your pet?”
“Well, it was a long time ago when I was just a pup. Name’s Rufus. I lived in a place a lot like this. People came to see me. They’d take me from my cage and play with me, but I would fight. Then one day, my pet came. He was different.”
“What do you mean?”
“He didn’t pull me from my cage. He just opened the door and waited. He waited a long time. When I finally came out, he kneeled down and put out his hand for me to sniff. Then he rubbed my head, looked straight into my eyes, and said, ‘Don’t be afraid. I won’t hurt you.’ It gets me all choked up, even after all these years.”
