The giggling quieted in unison, and the sounds of the night—lapping waves, distant owls, whispering breeze—softly enveloped the band of soul sisters. Each woman looked around the circle into the eyes of the others. A sense of awe passed through them like rustling autumn leaves.
“Inhale. Exhale. Breathe in. Breathe out,” Miriam requested.
With everyone’s eyes closed, the sentient rhythm of the encircled spirits became one, like a single organism moving in fluid motion.
“Inhale. Exhale. Keep following the rhythm of your breath and feel the earth beneath your feet,” Miriam continued, pausing between instructions. “Breathe in. Breathe out.”
