When I woke up, I was back in a hospital bed with both of my parents sitting beside the bed's railings. "We are right here. It's okay."
"The Skeleton isn't here?" I questioned my mind confused and terrified.
"Skeleton? No there are no skeletons here honey." My dad continued as I hugged him tightly. "It may have been something you saw before you had your seizure."
"Seizure?"
"Yes, you had another seizure -" Mom answered, her voice sounding distanced.
"Mom?" I questioned as I sat back down on the bed. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah I'm fine. It’s okay -" she continued again saying that blurred word. "I'll be right back, baby watch her."
When my mother came back, she was accompanied with a different doctor, but he was still of the same 'specialty'. I remember the Doctor introducing him to my parents acting as if I wasn’t even there. "Mr. and Mrs. Swallow this is Dr. Shane Masters; he is an Unnatural Genealogist. He believes that because she has had two seizures in the last four months that some more tests should be done on your daughter -" the previous Doctor casually introduced.
"Tests?" I asked upset, interrupting the man. "It was just a seizure; I am not an Unnatural!"
"Well that's what we hope this set of tests will clarify -," Doctor Masters spoke, stroking his bleach blonde silvery hair back over the top of his head. "I would like your parents to bring you up to the Hospital on Salem Drive once you are discharged. From there we will be able to start giving her some advanced testing."
"Okay, thank you doctor." I heard both of my parents return.
Crossing my arms, I puffed my cheeks, again giving my usual pouty angry face. "Not fair."
"Honey, not everything is fair, but this is for the benefit of your health. If the tests come back positive, then we will be able to treat you for your species and you will be able to go back to living a normal childhood." My mentally drained father ignorantly said.
"But I am not an UNNATURAL!" I shouted standing up on the bed frustrated. "THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH ME!" Falling back onto my knees. "It’s that Shadow! That Skeleton!" I again cried feeling tears roll down my eyes. "I wasn't ‘sick’ until I saw him!"
"Shadow? Skeleton?" My mother asked confused. Staring back at the Specialist she now asked, "Is that a possibility?"
"It could be, I won't know until we get the tests started." The Doctor answered. "-, should be discharged tomorrow then after that I ask of you guys to stop by at the Hospital.
"Okay, thank you Doctor Masters." My father answered, his voice also sounding distanced just like his wedded lover.
Puffed up with complete frustration I rolled over onto my side turning away from my parents. While they continued to talk to the Doctors, I angrily blamed what was happening to me on the fiery eyed Skeleton Shadow. The night was tough to get through after my tantrums and youngling outbursts but through some persuading my parents got me to go along with the tests, telling me that whatever the results were; they would still love me.
I remember the drive up there was super quiet, annoyingly quiet. At the current time, I didn't understand why they were so sad, or emotional when it was ME that was going to be tested on. I attempted to put up a show to get not only my mind off of what was going on but theirs also; however, I only ended up making the mood worse and getting yelled at. The ride got depressingly quiet from there on out. I knew why they were so pessimistic then but even though they disliked Unnaturals, many of these supernaturally gifted Humans were already living side by side with their non-supernaturally gifted counterparts. I knew that my parents were part of the group of Humans who believed they were superior to Unnaturals. They were part of the group that saw those with supernatural powers as spawns of the Satanic Devil. And I knew of that firsthand when my own parents blessed my room after my first ‘seizure’. Making me deeply ponder if those tests had come back positive... “would they exorcise their own child?”
