“I understand why the Coptics are important. But why the Shroud of Turin?”
“It is hard to see, I agree,” said el Ben. “To the Coptic, an ancient Christian sect, the Shroud is like finding the face of Christ.”

“So, we are dealing with a symbol?” asked Geigner, still a little confused as to what the Shroud was.
El Ben poured more coffee.
“It is a symbol, my American friend. We need symbols for unity. Otherwise the people of North Africa are nomadic tribes, wandering in the desert. Without structure, we will have revolutions, bloody ones. Many people on both sides will die. There will be no rule of law. Bandits and thieves will rule.”
