Bob pointed to a road coming into the Empty Quarter from the west. “The only other way to bring contraband into Saudi is through North Yemen. That part of the world is controlled by the Shia Houthis. They began as a preaching group, and now with Iranian support, are a political and military power in North Yemen. The Saudis are fighting them, with few positive results. If smugglers come north on that road, they have a clear shot to Riyadh from Najran, the Saudi border village, or they can go further north to Jordan.
