Gunvar put the package on a rock and slowly began to peel back the layers of wrapping paper. Finally, in a cracked and faded brown leather case that broke apart as he opened it, came the book. The cover was crumbling, but inside they could see pages and what looked like Arabic writing.
For a moment everyone was silent, looking at a book over 1400 years old that dated to the time of the Prophet, peace be upon him.
“The book,” said Hassa. She translated the name on the Qur’an. “This is the Damascus book, one of three Qur’ans that were written at the time the prophet died.”
