Some think the hawala money transfer system is unique to the Middle East and the Asian subcontinent. Did you know hawalas are in the US, often in grocery stores near where the immigrants live?
“To them, the hawala system is an open-ended invitation to launder money. Centuries ago, when the process was invented in South Asia, it made sense. Today, it also makes sense for illegal activity. Keeping the exchange of money out of the banking system, allows money laundering using the hawala system.”
“Amazing, Bob,” said Sam shaking his head. “A man could set off a bomb killing dozens of innocent people, but would never cheat in the hawala system. They give money to a third party and then someone overseas picks it up?”
