Rotek’s thoughts once again turned to the girl. He had locked her up for safekeeping, but now the very walls of the city were threatening to cave in, burying them alive. To make matters worse, the detention level was thirty floors down. He silenced a fear that insisted he was already too late.
Struggling to his feet, he stumbled toward the service stairs as the ground continued to shift. Reaching the top of the stairway, he punched the button and the door slid partially open, then stalled in a shower of sparks. Rotek tried to push through, squeezing his way past the edge of the door. He had almost made it when another series of tremors overtook the first. He lost his footing and was again tossed aside as sections of the wall crumbled around him.
Then the underground city went dark.
