That afternoon, sitting in her condo with Mona by her side, Jenny picked up her phone and nervously dialed Big Bill’s private line. The call was being taped. He picked up on the third ring. As was his way with his private line, he never said hello. The silence was unbearable and Jenny nervously shouted, “Bill, it’s Jenny.” They had not spoken in over two years. She could hear him breathing. There was no response and his silence was difficult to withstand.
“What do you want?” he finally responded tonelessly.
“I think we should talk,” Jenny said. She thought she sounded like a mouse and didn’t like it, so she cleared her throat and tried again. “I thought that since the lawyers have been unable to untangle our marriage, perhaps we could try to hammer out the resolution without them.” Jenny paused and waited. Again, it seemed to her as if an eternity was passing by slowly.
“What’s really going on, Jenny? You finding out that life without me and all the money you’re used to isn’t so easy? You hoping to come on back and settle into the lil’ ole mansion you left behind in such a hurry?”
Good God, his ego was unbelievable. Jenny felt herself getting pissed, and she was amazed at how easily he could make her angry and want to pop off. She looked up at Mona, who was sitting on the other side of the table listening to their conversation. Mona shook her head from side to side and mouthed the word “no,” warning Jenny not to follow her instinct.
