That night, the burner phone rang.
It had sat there, on my bedside table, for days that turned to weeks that turned to months. More than once, Iād almost given up, almost let the battery run down or dropped it in a glass of water. But just as I still thought of David every single day, every night, I remembered his words to me. āKeep it on, all the time.ā
Caution had been drilled into me, though, so I picked it up with shaking fingers and hit the green button to answer the call. I lifted it to my ear and waited in silence.
