I stared at myself in the bedroom mirror while Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like the Wolf” blared from my iPod deck on my nightstand. A fun fact about Parker Chase: When I’m nervous, I spin 80’s pop music like no one’s business.
My phone chirped, signaling another text.
I couldn’t help but smile. Carter and I had been texting on and off all day, just innocent little flirtatious messages that had us acting like teenagers. We were pretty cute, I couldn’t deny it, but with every message he sent, the more my nerves went into overdrive.
I didn’t enjoy feeling this way. For the past two years, ever since going into private investigation with Vivian, I’d had this insane amount of confidence that I’d never really acknowledged before. I guess that’s what happens when you find your true calling…self-assurance is suddenly your greatest asset.
