One second of wait, then my fingers let go and the arrows flew upward into the sky catching the sunlight, sending shadows on the ground around me.
More than a mile away were the Juggernauts, and no arrow could reach a distance like that. As the arrows pierced the sky, they became mere specks in the distance. They were intent on catching their prey. I felt the fire inside me as they combusted. I felt the distant bang of them breaking Mach 1, the speed of sound. The arrows were incinerated, but the tips of hardened bone kept flying through the air. Not even a blur could be seen in the sky. They broke apart in unison, fanning out to form the Juggernauts’ positions. Maybe for a split second they knew, understood that death was upon them. One, the leader was able to raise his head slightly, to see the burning missile only an inch from his chest. His mouth creaked open to scream an order, but the tip had found its target. At the same time, each tip buried into one Juggernaut’s heart. So strong, and moving so fast, the tips came out through their backs and buried into the ground behind them. Each Juggernaut was blown backward by the force, landing flat on its back, dead in midair. All was quiet as the motionless bodies lay in the field. I looked down to my bow and as always, it had taken the strain easily. Its shiny wood was unmarked. I reached up and took off my face mask, feeling the light breeze of a southern French August evening on my face. Nodding in the direction of the bodies lying in the vineyards, I turned around and headed back to Base Camp.
