Mat placed the pilot’s headset back on. “Sorry for the interruption,” said Mat.
“Who is this? Can you repeat that?” said Amy.
“This is Sheriff McKenna from Shady Oaks, Florida, calling from Air Force One. Sorry, I have to go. We have visitors coming. The First Lady is here with me. The president and his family survived the assault, as well as Agent Cass. As far as I know, he and Cass have not been captured. The terrorists number about one hundred. They have semiautomatic weapons, and they are well trained.”
Mary Lu’s voice broke in. “Mat, you have to go. They are headed your way.”
“Roger that,” he said.
He continued with Washington. “They have the control center complex and the spaceport. The terrorists have implemented an emergency protocol that has divided the city into three sectors.”
Sam leaned into the cockpit and yelled, “Mat. We have to go now. Now, Mat—now!”
Mat could feel the urgency of her voice. For a moment he thought that maybe she would grab him and drag him out of the chair.
Mat said, “We’ll call later over the Secret Service emergency sat phone. Bye.” He got up from the pilot’s chair. “Cockpit, terminate call. I was never here.”
“Understood,” said the AI voice of Air Force One over the cockpit speakers. The call was terminated.
He ripped off the pilot’s headset and moved as fast as he could with Sam.
