There was once an amoeba who lived happily in a small puddle feeding on a steady supply of algae. He was, however, careful to keep the right ecological balance in his little world and understood the need to conserve resources and avoid the pitfalls of excessive greed. As he was undoubtedly cleverer than the average amoeba he attempted to strike up conversations with other beings. He sometimes overheard the conversations of humans and found this especially interesting but when he tried on two or three occasions to strike up a conversation with a solitary human being they just looked around in puzzlement then shrugged their shoulders and walked away. On several occasions dogs came to his puddle to peer into it, probably with the idea of slaking their thirst, but when the amoeba called out to them in his little squeaky voice they barked back a firm reproof and moved on to look for a normal puddle.
One day the amoeba was alone in his puddle with the sun shining straight down on him when, without much hope, he called up at the sun, ‘Hello sun - how are you today’. To his surprise and delight the sun replied.
‘Hello little creature. I can just see you. I am as bright and fine as ever thank you.’
