Mum didn’t explode, she went very quiet and gazed out of the window for over a minute. Jenny chewed a fingernail and waited. “ I was half expecting this”, she said, “ I see the way you look at each other and feelings run very strong when you are seventeen. I do remember. Do you realise how dangerous this is. If you get pregnant you can say goodbye to uni for a start.”
“I know mum,” Jenny sobbed, “What can I do? I can’t give him up.”
“You’re really sure about that.”
“I’ve never been so sure about anything in my life.”
“Then there’s nothing else for it. You’ll have to see doctor Evans and go on the pill.”
“It’ll be so embarrassing,” said Jenny.
“Embarrassing for you but just an ordinary everyday matter for him,” said Mum.
