PERHAPS THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE between cats and dogs has to do with being proper: cats are, dogs are not. For instance, when nature calls, cats retreat to a litter box nestled away in a secluded place or find privacy outside. Dogs, on the other hand, simply do their thing. Anywhere. Anytime. You are unlikely to ever find a selfconscious dog, even caught in “the moment.” Dogs communicate a certain disregard for cultured living.
When Watson was out and about on his “walkies,” he was clearly thrilled at the prospect of reading “pee-mail.” He would do this by sniffing down every single bush, post, tree, box, garbage can, pole—any vertical item tall enough for another dog to pee on. Once fully sniffed, analyzed, and catalogued, Watson enthusiastically left a pee-mail for his peers to read later. Thus, he would contribute to communication between all manner of canines, likeminded and otherwise. Though it seemed “uncultured” to us, even gross, to watch him do this, that’s just how dogs keep in touch.
Watson obviously loved his walkies. One reason was that he especially loved regular communication and understanding with his peers. Often. In doing so, he was part of a larger community.
