WE’RE PRETTY SURE WATSON was a mix of Border collie, black Lab and a little pit bull. The overwhelming evidence was that the predominant strain was Border collie, because he’d patrol the house to monitor everyone’s whereabouts and wellbeing.
He’d take it upon himself to spot-check all of us throughout the evening, in particular, when everyone was home. Nothing serious or invasive, just a quick pass through, nose in the arm to make sure we knew he was there, or a little sniff of the cats, then back to his own affairs.
Since Watson found being in a happy place a natural state, he wanted to account for all of us and, hopefully, find us happy too. It seemed to worry him. Enough so that he’d leave his warm bed every night just to make sure all was well with everyone. He’d even get up to check on his feline brothers…which often resulted in his bed being occupied by one of the cats when he returned from his rounds.
Now that’s some kind of devotion.
