You must be people oriented to be in ministry. Don’t stop at your boss. To do so cannot help you in any way.
However, there are more than a few pastors that have a large enough, or unhealthy, ego that they will perceive you as a threat if you have some gifts that garner attention that they are used to getting. Once that perception is made on their part, you are in trouble. Particularly if you are in a denomination that has a historically based hierarchical structure that sets clergy above the common person, of which you, the non-ordained minister, are one. You might find yourself experiencing some weird game playing before you figure out what is going on. If you find yourself in this predicament, realize it is not the end of the world, nor the end of your ministry, necessarily. You may need to find some ways to stroke your boss’ ego. Do a little soul searching to see if you are in competition with him or her… and stop it if you are. Perhaps yours is the bigger ego. Do you really want to be boss? Are you nuts?
