“Are you going to be okay?” Danny’s eyes were bright and luminescent in the reflection of the streetlights.
“Yes,” I managed, as I got out of the car. He stopped he car and got out, walking over to my side but keeping his distance.
“I can stay for a bit… if you'd like,” he offered, his voice halting as though he wanted to take back every word as they were coming out of his mouth.
“No. Go … home,” I said, imagining his new girlfriend there, curled up in his bed or on his couch, waiting for him.
Danny paused, as he turned to walk back around to the driver’s side.
“Call me if you need anything. Anything at all.”
“I will.” I said, faking a smile, knowing that I wouldn't call him, even if I was on fire. I knew that I needed to leave him alone. He had suffered enough.
