Damon was still getting the hang of considering Sky his friend. For most of their lives, he’d been ignored by Sky, who was the same age as Jess, Damon’s older sister, the two of whom used to run around together. Damon was always the annoying, tag-a-long kid brother. When it was just Damon and Jess together, things were great, but whenever Sky was around, Damon wasn’t wanted.
Everyone expected him and Sky to be besties because they were both gay, but life didn’t work like that. Being gay was about the only thing they had in common, especially after Jess died. Their relationship went from one of grudging tolerance to something more frigid once she was gone. Sky could hardly stand to be in the same room as Damon, who looked like the male version of Jess. Damon resented Sky for all the time with Jess he’d stolen, time that could have been Damon’s. For many years after her death, they didn’t speak to one another. It wasn’t until Sky came to the city for his advanced degree, after finishing his undergrad degree out-of-province, that they started hanging out.
