They made very slow progress over the next week. Horses stumbled into rabbit and gopher holes, wagon wheels broke, an unexpected rain turned a gentle slope into a slippery quagmire. Their nights had been plagued by swarms of insects, and their sleep constantly disturbed by a nightly chorus of strange noises. One night, the blood-chilling roar of a Rathska brought the entire camp to full alert. The entire camp faced the dawn bleary-eyed and exhausted.
