WHO AM I?

I am your hands. At play. At work. Folded. Cupped. Applauding. Busy. Patting. Caressing. Touching. Tenderly exploring. Smacking. Crushing. Tickling. Pushing. Ges-tur-ing! Thumbing. Picking. Applauding. Fondling. Entwining. Knitting. Sewing. Playing an instrument. Smoothing. Soothing. Questioning, why? Why!? Saying stay! Sit. Come. Fists punching. Slapping! Loading. Saluting. Waving. Preserving. Defending. Gripping. Clutching. Pointing. Fingering! Snapping, ah-ha! That’s it! Plucking. Buttoning. Zipping. Hitchhiking. Texting. Dialing. Agile and extraordinary. Eyes of the soul. Reverent. Knitting a veil for the Queen of Heaven. Making the Sign of the Cross. Flipping off an aggressor. Covering your mouth in surprise! The point of contact for formative forces. Forces of science, music, craft, the arts, mechanics, technology, and love. The hands are all about love. Touching and being touched.

WHY AM I HERE?

It is the Norns (female beings) who weave the threads of destiny for you in Norse mythology. In Greek mythology it is Ariadne who hands you the thread to find your way out of the labyrinth and avoid your sacrificial death. In your own hands is the red thread that runs through every event of your life from what you once were to what you have become onward to what you will become. Your hands are the keeper of the threads of the loom of your life, be they colorful threads of persons, places, activities and things or of your electronic loom, which leads you on through threaded messages. As the saying goes, these threads of your fate are in our own hands.

WHAT DO I WANT?

The poet Robert Browning wrote, “Ah, but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what’s a heaven for?” What is it that our hands want? Of all the actions which our hands can take, it is perhaps reaching that may be one of the most significant. What are your hands reaching for?
