Black Coffee
Life without her. Zack takes his coffee black most days. An old man, purple veins run down his arms and hands spotted brown from age, the dead giveaway. His brown hair and shadow beard peppered white, dazzling hazel eyes lacked the vibrancy they once had, whenever she was in close proximity. The house, their weathered, clapboard cottage by the beach with chipped, green paint, and a porch that could use staining. Adelaide took care of the details. Zack counted backward, the day he lifted his arms high, opened the cardboard box and set his love free. Harry caught a ride on a warm, soft breeze, not before enveloping him with her love. He knew his time was close. He could not wait one more second to get to her. The Cove never felt the same. Addie juggled her busy schedule, between him and her new family, it could not have been easy. She was a wonderful daughter. She did precisely what her dying mother asked, expected, and then some. Summers were reserved for Zack. Six weeks at the beach, the girls descended with princess carry ons, pink polka dot bikinis, striped hats and moody personalities. His dollies immersed in Adelaide and Harrison’s world.
