“Burning Man takes place on a vast dry lake bed in the Black Rock Desert called the playa. This huge playa is covered in a fine dust which is very alkaline. It keeps anything from growing. So, there are no living things, besides people, at Burning Man. No bugs, no plants. Even birds fly around the playa because nothing grows for them to eat. And this alkali dust covers the cars and people, too. Have you seen the cars in town after Burning Man?” Most students nodded their heads.
Orlando had seen the burners’ cars around town. They looked like they’d been uncovered from being buried for a hundred years.
“Well, this dust covers everyone’s bodies, too, which helps keep the sun off your skin so you don’t get sunburned. And it keeps the smell down, if you know what I mean!” This time there was general laughter in the room.
