Noé laughed, a throaty sound, and her huge brown eyes lit with merriment. "I'm not from this island. I'm from one of the islands near here. I just come to sing to the fish."
"Sing to the fish?" Ruby wrinkled her forehead.
"Yes, well, sometimes they forget who they are. I have to remind them."
Great, Jillie thought, everyone on this island is crazy!
The comment didn’t put Ruby off at all. "How do you know what to sing?"
"Oh, it depends on where in my body the song comes from. The one I was singing earlier came from my elbow. It's a naming song, to help the fish remember their names."
Now Jillie could feel her forehead wrinkling. Had this girl escaped from an insane asylum?
Ruby, always curious, continued, "Are there songs in other parts of your body?"
"Oh yes," answered Noé. "There's one in my shoulder for the birds, and one in my knee for the trees…"
