Singing Happy Birthday while Asian (July 2020) (Elfrink, 2020)
“’We were celebrating my tita’s birthday, literally just singing happy birthday to her and taking pictures, when this white supremacist starts yelling disgusting racist remarks at us,’ Orosa’s niece, Jordan Chan, wrote in an Instagram post. ‘Trump’s going to f--- you,’ he said, adding that the family ‘need to leave’ and calling one of them an ‘Asian piece of s---.’ After the video went viral on Tuesday, multiple journalists identified the man as Michael Lofthouse, CEO of Solid8, a cloud computing firm based in San Francisco. By the day’s end, Lofthouse had deleted all his social media accounts and issued an apology to a local TV station. The incident is the latest vivid illustration of a rising tide of racist abuse against Asian Americans during the coronavirus pandemic, a trend many critics tie to Republican leaders blaming China for the disease. President Trump has repeatedly used the racist term ‘kung flu’ for the virus, and on Tuesday again called it the ‘China Virus’ on Twitter.”

While Taking out the Trash, Going to Sam’s Clu b (Apr 2020) (Tina Moore, 2020)
In Brooklyn, New York, an Asian woman suffered an apparently race-based acid attack while taking out her garbage on April 5. A few weeks earlier in Texas, a man targeted and stabbed a Burmese-American man and his two children, ages 2 and 6, at a Sam’s Club. He said he had attempted to kill the family because he believed they were “Chinese and infecting people with the coronavirus.” One of the children had a laceration wound from his ear across his eye.
