Go to the Doctor/Take Your Medicine
Prov 8:12 (KJV): “I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.”
Prov 8:12 (WEB): “I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of ingenious inventions.”
Because most of these letters will deal with receiving your healing by faith, it might seem that I am against doctors or medicines or surgery. Quite the contrary. The Bible says that God gives us “the knowledge of witty inventions.” I believe that God has always been at work on the earth, giving scientists clues and aid to defeat sickness and disease.
I used to believe that all the Old Testament laws that God gave the children of Israel about things that should be treated as unclean were given to protect them from disease. They had laws governing what happened if you touched a dead body, or touched someone who was sick, etc. I believed that God was protecting them long before microscopes, bacteria, and germs were discovered.
Today I researched this theory and found out it was true! I found many articles that showed how the Old Testament laws governing what was unclean helped keep the children of Israel healthy and safe from diseases:
“Biblical admonitions also include avoiding contact with animals that have died or with whatever has touched them (see Leviticus 11:32–40). Porous earthen vessels, potentially contaminated, were to be destroyed to avoid spreading disease. These biblical regulations are consistent with sound microbiological techniques, and are fundamentally important in fighting infectious disease. It was the priests' job to teach and explain these laws. Priests were to designate as unclean those who had contagious diseases characterized by skin rashes, such as leprosy, measles, smallpox and scarlet fever. Such individuals were to be isolated from others to prevent the spread of disease (see Leviticus 13). These biblical guidelines are the basis of medically sound quarantine procedures that have been used for centuries. Bible guidelines include avoiding contact with personal items of sick people that could transmit germs (Leviticus 13:47–59). Contaminated items were to be washed or burned (which destroys microorganisms). Biblical health instructions even applied to dwellings—mold or fungal growth had to be scraped off, or a house would be quarantined or demolished. Cracks, which harbor ticks and other disease-bearing bugs, were to be plastered (Leviticus 14:33–48). The priest functioned as both a public health educator and a building inspector, to promote health and prevent disease.
The Bible acknowledges that body fluids can be a vehicle for transmitting disease (Leviticus 15). Contact with human waste materials, nasal discharges, tears, saliva and other fluids, or contact with soiled towels or linen, can spread infectious disease. Trachoma—a leading cause of blindness—is spread by contact with soiled hand towels and eye-seeking flies. Those coming into contact with fluids from a sick person had to wash their hands and clothes in water, bathe, and remain isolated from other people until evening as a precaution against spreading disease (Leviticus 15:11). Men and women were to bathe after having sexual relations (Leviticus 15:18). The purpose of these sanitary laws was to promote health and prevent disease (Leviticus 15:31). They were not just ceremonial rituals.
One of the most practical and powerful biblical admonitions states that when people dwell together, human wastes are to be deposited outside the living area and buried (Deuteronomy 23:12–14). This prevents waste materials from coming in contact with people, flies and other organisms that transmit disease. It also prevents the contamination of water supplies. Many diseases, such as diarrhea, dysentery, hookworm, roundworms, cholera and typhoid, result from contact with human waste.”

Long before the discovery of diseases, God was helping the children of Israel “find out knowledge of” helpful medical practices. If God went through so much trouble to help keep them from being sick back, then would He do less to protect us now, as believers in Jesus Christ?
I believe that God can work through a doctor, surgeon, dietician, pharmacist, etc. I do believe that you should pray for them as they devise their treatment plan for you. I believe that you should pray for the advice they give you, and unless you have a solid track record of healing by faith, you probably should follow their advice.
What do I mean by track record? Years ago, Dr. Frederick K.C. Price preached a sermon about your “faith photo album.” He said in your faith photo album are things that you can point to and say God did that for me, and He helped me here and delivered me there.
In my faith photo album, I have many healing testimonies. I have laid hands on myself and my children and seen fevers broken. My back was broken in 1983, and I was in great pain most of the time. I was supernaturally healed to the point that I could lift weights, run, play competitive basketball and football, etc. without pain up to this very day in 2017.
I have been supernaturally healed of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)—no more need for medications. I was supernaturally healed of several sports injuries without surgery (surgery was prescribed but not needed), a sports hernia, a severe knee injury, and a severe injury to my ankle/foot.
Each healing helped build my faith for the next healing. That’s not everybody’s testimony. There is no condemnation if it’s not. There have been many other things for which I have gone to the doctor or have taken medicine. My faith victories merely mean that most of the time, I look to my faith as the source of my healing, and I prayerfully consider what the doctor prescribes. I praise God for doctors who have helped me get better or identified the area where I need to focus my faith.
I believe that God is going to heal you. I believe it is His will for your life. These letters were meant to help build your faith. Believing that God can use doctors and medication can most definitely be a big part of that. And for everything that the doctors can’t do and medicines can’t do, God Himself is undoubtedly capable, willing, and available to.
