Why Did Jesus Come?
1 John 4:9 (NKJV): “In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.”
1 John 3:8 (NKJV): “…For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.”
Acts 10:38 (NLT): “And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.”
Luk 11:14-15, 18-20 (NKJV): “And He was casting out a demon, and it was mute. So it was, when the demon had gone out, that the mute spoke; and the multitudes marveled. But some of them said, He casts out demons by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons. If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? Because you say I cast out demons by Beelzebub. And if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. But if I cast out demons with the finger of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you.”
It’s so easy to think about Jesus coming to earth to seek and save the lost. However, we get so caught up with Jesus being the only way to the Father and eternal life that we forget that He also came to heal. I John 3:8 says that Jesus came “to destroy the works of the devil.” Part of the devil’s work was to eternally separate men from the Father. We know that Jesus destroyed that work at the resurrection.
But there were other works that Jesus was sent here to destroy. Acts 10:38 makes it very clear what these works were: “healing all who were oppressed of the devil.” So, wherever the devil had made people sick or oppressed them spiritually, Jesus healed them.
Why did Jesus heal? That was part of His assignment. Sickness and disease are works of the devil, and Jesus was sent here to destroy everything that the devil put in place after Adam’s fall. Jesus was sent to restore God’s original vision for man.
You may have heard the “good news” of the gospel, that Jesus came so that your sins could be forgiven and that you could have eternal life. That’s good news, but there is more good news.
What is that news? That you don’t have to be sick. The same Jesus that came to bring you salvation came to bring you healing. It doesn’t matter what caused you to be sick or what disease you have. All sickness has the same remedy the healing power of God through Jesus Christ.
After World War II some Japanese soldiers had not received news that war was over and were still trying to fight. When slavery ended in the United States there were many negro slaves that did not get the good news that they were now ex-slaves.
Many people have never heard the good news that the same Jesus that was sent on assignment to destroy the power of sin was also sent to destroy the power of sickness and every other work of the devil. Receive the good news today. Set your heart to enjoy every benefit that God planned for you when He, in His great mercy, sent His Son to earth for us.
