Did you know that when the ambulance shows up that the EMTs don’t fuss at the heart attack victim about his eating habits or her smoking habit?
They don’t criticize the gunshot victim for being in the wrong place at the wrong time or hanging with the wrong people. Their response is to try to save their life, to heal their wounds, to show acts of mercy and love. After the first response of love, a doctor or someone else might counsel them on their choices/mistakes.
Today the Holy Spirit showed me something in the story of the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4: 7-42) that I’d never seen before. Before Jesus talked to her about her sin, He showed her His love. Before he addressed the fact that she’d had five husbands and was living with someone who wasn’t her husband, He offered her a gift in love:
Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” The woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? “Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?” Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, “but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
