Here I sat, out of sync with my own time, living in the past, like a shadow in time.
I set my thoughts free, allowing them to roam. I recalled those softly spoken words I’d heard the night I left: ‘Every moment is a new beginning, every instant a choice.’ I thought now of just how true those words were, for every moment one has the potential to change what lies ahead. I imagined each choice as a door, opening into a room full of doors. We choose a single door and walk through it, only to face another room full of doors. Each instant offers an endless number of possible futures. I let this idea roll around in my mind for a while, thinking about how much and how little we control our own destinies—one single choice had the ability to change everything.
