After all my prayers, there was no change. Sonny was just as quiet and pale as he had been. The room was so quiet that I had to have some kind of noise, so I turned on the little TV attached to the wall. I switched channels until I found one of those Christian networks and started listening to a church program. I thought I might get some idea about what I should do. My family was always close to God and the church, and I needed something to comfort me. I thought if they played a hymn I knew, it would give me some comfort and direction. Then they played "The Old Rugged Cross," and that just made me feel worse. That song was sung at my grandma's funeral and every other funeral I'd ever gone to. I almost turned the TV off, it depressed me so, but when the song ended, so did the program.
The next show was called The Light and Life Hour. An announcer said the preacher was Brother Jimmy Joe Carlson, who had written some books and even been on the award-winning Nancy Nolan talk show. I'd watched Nancy Nolan a few times, and I thought she had really good guests on her show. I figured this Brother Jimmy Joe must know his stuff, so I stuck with the station to see what he was going to preach about.
