This book explores our ideas of self, repeatedly revealing "who we are not" to gently bring us into peace without attempting to alter our external conditions. It is well known that when we dissociate ourselves from all our worldly identities, we will naturally come to peace. This book lays out a clear roadmap to achieve enduring peace through detachment.
But detachment does not mean renouncement of all types of pleasures and living a life of inactivity and boredom. In truth, detachment can relieve us of all the burdens and baggage we carry, leaving us free to enjoy all the genuine pleasures available on earth to the fullest. The only condition is that we must not cling to the pleasures but be ready to let them go freely. Hence our life here can be one of unending joy and achievement.
Born in the rich culture of India K R V Hari has been exposed to two opposing world views enabling him to achieve synergy and realize harmony. This enabled him to synthesize the self-oriented Western perspective with the community oriented native one to arrive at a wholesome concept of self.
Somehow this situation is overlooked by almost all of us. But is this not true that we get fooled by our imaginary stories while being oblivious to the real one unfolding all around us?
Book Excerpt
Searching for Self – in Pursuit of Inner Peace
There are two worlds in which we live – the objective outer world and the imaginary inner world inside our heads. Like the replica web pages used in phishing attacks on the Internet, we are duped by our own imaginary inner world which we mistakenly assume to be the objective outer world. Hence, we need to distinguish clearly between reality, and our own impressions and ideas about it, to become aware of what is truly happening in our lives. This power of discernment enables us to pursue mental clarity through the practice of self-observation. Diligent self-observation and complete and unconditional self-acceptance directly reveal to us the unhelpful and destructive thoughts and habits that repeatedly lead us astray.
