Chapter 11
Corporal Pino ran a tight ship in his early 1972 heroin dealings on the Camp Eagle compound. The devious company clerk, with each visit off base to the massage pallor near the Post Exchange (PX) returned with a half kilo of high-grade smack. The heroin was so potent that even snorting it, like tobacco in colonial times from the hand’s snuff-box, could lead to not only the expected high but also the risk of respiratory depression and death. When regurgitated, stomach contents were aspirated into the lungs. The resulting damage caused death by inhibiting life-sustaining oxygen delivery to the body. It was essentially drowning in one’s vomit.
