And down, deep down, in the space where the floor became the universe, something cold and ancient stirred, and reddish-silver lights in the darkness flickered in and out like blinking eyes, and the air around everything undulates with a nearly imperceivable groan.
Gazing into the maw, Evelyn feels dizzy and faint. She grabs William’s shoulder for support as her knees buckle. She looks at him, fear flooding her mind.
"What have I done?" Evelyn dismays aloud.
But William shares not her horror. Instead, his eyes are wide and reflective, filled with ethereal awe, as black and as vast as the eternity that stretches out before them.
"Something beautiful," he replies.
