Levi sat behind his desk and nodded toward the guest chair in front of him. Rhiann sat down.
“Miss Kelly...”
She tried to smile. “Rhiann.”
He nodded. “Rhiann. If I had known George was behind on the taxes, I would have easily stepped up and paid them. A man shouldn’t lose his thousand-acre ranch over a measly two thousand dollars. I don’t know why George didn’t tell me.”
“Neither do I. And I am sorry. I stayed up for several hours last night because this bothers me. I may have found have a solution.”
“Oh?” You’ll sell the ranch back to me for the taxes you paid?”
“No, not at all.”
A frown came to Levi’s face. “Then, I’m not sure we have anything to talk about. I’ve worked that place for more than eight years. I was George’s right-hand man, especially when he couldn’t handle things anymore. I have blood and sweat equity in the land.”
She nodded. “I understand that. But, you see, my family’s blood and sweat is in that land, too. My grandmother was born and raised there, and she desired to return. When we found out the owner was behind on the property taxes and had passed away, we believed this was meant to be. She and I planned to operate the rescue together. I still have that dream.”
“I had plans for that place, too.”
Rhiann nodded. “I know, and if you’ll hear me out, I think we can find a compromise.”
