“You know what’s ironic?” Gordie bristled, “here we are, struggling to make it to the Majors, and the guys we try to emulate, the guys we want to be, are out playing golf in the middle of baseball season. Can’t they be satisfied with what they have? I mean, weren’t they once in our shoes? Don’t they remember what it was like? I don’t think I’ll ever forget all those stinking locker rooms, all those hours on the bus, the miserable fans on the road. And I’ve only been in the minors three years! I mean, it’s not like we’re performing brain surgery or negotiating world peace.” He gave a bitter laugh, again realizing the inherent nature of pro sports. “We’re playing a game. That’s all we’re doing.”
“Wrong, Gordo. In Little League it’s a game. In the pros, it’s just business, like any other business. If the guys have fun doing what they’re doing, all the better for management. If you want to make any kind of living as a ballplayer, you’ve got to remember that.”
