They put in their antes and the devil deftly shuffled the cards and dealt. A seven showing for Jim and his two hole cards were an eight and nine. The devil showed a queen of diamonds and bet $4,000. Jim called.
Next up cards: Jack of hearts for Jim and king for the devil.
The devil rapped his knuckles on the table. “Check.”
Jim decided to test him right away. “Twenty thousand,” he said, carefully placing the chips into the pot.
“Respectable bet. I Call.”
The devil dealt the next card to Jim. “My queen,” he said, then dealt himself a seven. “I still check.”
Jim didn’t hesitate. “Thirty thousand.”
Ignis peeked at his down cards. “I think I’ll let you draw first blood, Mr. Steadman,” he said and turned his up cards over and gave the deck to Jim.
The play continued with Jim pulling in a few hefty pots. He glanced at the clock. Eleven. An hour had passed, and Jim had a chip lead of $100,000. He studied his opponent carefully, looking for some giveaway to what kind of cards he was holding.
