Jim glanced down at the sidewalk. What he’d suspected was true. He looked up to her.
Her eyes narrowed. “What is it?”
“He’s using you, Karen. He’s using you to get to me.”
“What?”
“That’s right. He wants to get back at me for beating him at cards and because I wouldn’t cheat with him at poker. That’s what this is all about.”
Her head snapped back. “Are you saying that’s why he wanted to go out with me? That he couldn’t find me attractive on my own? That’s kind of an insult.”
“I didn’t mean it to be. I’m just telling you what’s going on. Sure, you’re beautiful and sweet and all. Any guy could fall for you. But it can’t just be a coincidence that he all of a sudden got interested in you the day after I told him I wouldn’t cheat with him.”
“Maybe it is. You can’t know that, and neither can I.”
Jim sighed. “All right. We’ll just play it by ear from now on.”
He walked away with his head down and shoulders slumped.
