That Wednesday night, Jim took his father’s car and parked a half block from Karen’s house and waited.
At 6:30 it happened.
Danny pulled up. Karen met him at the door, smiling that fantastic smile. They got into Danny’s car, and she sat close to him. Jim squeezed the steering wheel and clenched his teeth. He considered following them but was afraid of what he’d see. A stop at the forest preserve? A good night kiss?
He went limp and weak. His stomach turned. He just leaned back and closed his eyes. His pulse raced. He put his face in his hands and rubbed his tearing eyes.
