im carried her books and made small talk as they strolled home. Then he got to the point.
“So, when did you start palling around with Danny?”
“Oh, I’ve known him for a while. But lately we’ve just gotten friendlier.”
“How’d that happen?”
She shrugged. “I don’t know. He just ran into me in the hall a few times and we talked and got to know each other better. He can be really funny.”
“Yeah. I saw you laughing with him a lot. What do you think of him?”
“He’s nice. And as I said, he’s got a good sense of humor. Why do you ask?”
“Just curious.”
She stopped walking and cocked her head, her lips forming a semi-smile. “Jimmy, are you jealous?”
“No. It’s just that …. Well, yeah. I guess I am a little jealous. I mean, I thought you and I were going steady. Just because I didn’t give you a ring to wear doesn’t mean we’re not.”
They started walking again. “I only talked to the guy.”
“Do you like him?”
“Kinda. He’s fun to be with. That’s all.”
